The World Fantasy Convention was a lot fun—informative panels,
inspirational discussion, and familiar faces (and a super convenient
location for me!) all helped to make it a worthwhile experience. But as I
was chatting with various writers and publishers, I realized something:
People are actually looking at charlotte-koch.com! Oh no! (No sarcasm
there—this was a bit of a surprise to me.)
But it shouldn’t have come as a surprise. I’d been giving people my
business card, which clearly directs people to this domain. I’d ignored the
site for so long that the previous website’s impression of the status of
The Wolfskull Standard had become misleading.
Additionally, the recent EFA webinar I attended, which was about
websites, encouraged me to take another look. I’d already lavished so much
attention onto magentastripe.com; now it’s time for this domain to
see some TLC, too. That’s why I decided to—well—completely overhaul
charlotte-koch.com this weekend.
Behold the new website! It’s leaner and simpler, and it matches my preferred
style of web design in general. The site’s page layout was designed and
coded by hand. This time, we are using the sblg static site generator.
It’s a very simple tool—very Unix-like. Maybe I’ll go into further
detail about it on my personal website, which has a more technical
leaning anyway.
Let this new blog post also serve as an announcement that I do fully intend
to blog much more regularly. There’s a lot to talk about: My recent
experience with copyediting a YA fantasy novel, learning about the
screenwriting biz, researching trends in editing, and much more are already
on my mind. Stay tuned!
Introducing The Wolfskull Standard
Last updated: 10/31/2026
Coming Soon
By the abyss! Swashbuckling adventure, fickle gods and furry tails
come together in Charlotte Koch’s debut novel.
Fenicia, the veteran goldenhound piratess, is the most capable paw aboard the
infamous Starry Vine. But when the unexpected loss of the Captain thrusts her
into becoming Captain herself, she must quickly adjust to her new position
while staving off the mutinous calls of Nimbus—a newcomer ram, and the former
Captain’s own nephew.
Nimbus’s promises of wealth and glory are hard to ignore. His knowledge of
the outside world and his connections to the wealthiest businessbeasts of
Port Sokuit could help Starry Vine in their time of greatest need. All
Fenicia has to do is abdicate the helm…
Set in Azuaveria, an archipelago situated in the eye of a giant, endless
hurricane, The Wolfskull Standard will take you on a voyage through
uncharted territory in the realm of anthropomorphic fiction.
Background
Long story short, The Wolfskull Standard began as a NaNoWriMo 2022 entry that
would provide the backstory for a character I drew once… then it kinda
consumed me.
On April 9, 2021, I drew the original picture:
Then I drew another one, with the following caption:
This is the same pirate character I drew last week. Gave her name. Now I
kinda want to draw her doing everything.
At one point, I had considered making Fenicia’s story a graphic novel. But
this was before I had acquired my “good” drawing tablet (Huion Kamvas 16)
and I wasn’t sure if I really wanted to commit to such a huge undertaking.
Instead, I just focused on nothing but the story.
